JEWISH HUMOR

Jewish humor. As if you couldn’t figure this out already, I have a theory about this, too. We’ve been around for 5,764 years. How can that be? No other major culture has been around this long. At least none that I know of. Again, e-mails would be OK.

So I ask again, how can that be? And to top it off, for many of those 5,764 years they’ve been trying to wipe us out. It seems like there are two choices when people are trying to wipe you out. 1) You can become a victim, kvetch about it and probably get wiped out. 2) You can make jokes about it, minimize your wiper outer types by belittling them with humor and obviously NOT get wiped out, since we’re still here and we are great at making jokes about our circumstances.

Look at “Say Oy Vey” and “Goys and Dolls”. Irreverent poking fun at what could be considered pretty serious problems. There isn’t a situation I can think of that can’t be made better by a joke. And someone wise once told me to remember that enlightenment has the word light in it. I don’t think they were referring to the light from a bulb, or the sun.
