Jewish Holidays
Let’s be honest. Most of Jewish holidays can be summed up as follows:
They tried to kill us.
They failed.
Let’s eat.
Once we accept that, things get a lot easier. Then we can talk about
the whole concept of a Jewish holiday. My whole approach to living is
based on a practical nature. I think that the origin of holidays must
have come from the need back then to break up the generally horrible
conditions people lived in with something joyous to look forward to.
How Yom Kippur evolved, I’ll never know so maybe someone can e-mail
me and tell me that one. Anyway, back to Jewish holidays in general.
We all have our favorites. Mine is Pesach. I love the story about the
exodus from Egypt and how we fought for our freedom from slavery. It’s
something that’s extremely inspirational and I love that we read
it every year. I sometimes comment at the Seder in a voice similar to
Mel Brooks’ “2000 year old man.” Always gets a laugh.
And then there’s the food!!! I have a question though. Another
chance for e-mails. Why is it that we love Haroseth so much on Pesach,
but never make it any other time of the year? Let me know if you have
a theory. OK, so what follows is a somewhat informational and occasionally
irreverent (though loving) description of the Jewish Holidays.
